Tegernsee adventures II - hiking on the high route

Back in August I went on a cycling trip around the Tegernsee - a beautiful lake about an hour by train away from Munich and I enjoyed it a lot. In fact I liked it so much that I came back only a few weeks later with a friend. This time we left the bikes at home and went hiking on the high route from Gmund to Tegernsee.

The high route is a nice trail that is comfortably to walk also for not so trained hikers. No special hiking boots are required although it's more comfortable to wear some especially for the part that goes through the woods or when you want to extend your hike and go more uphill. The route we walked took about 2 hours. The "Tegernseer Höhenweg" (high route) is very easy to find.  From Gmund, where you start, signs are placed all along the way for orientation.

Starting at the train station in Gmund we walked along the Mangfall ...

and along the shore  ...

... before we hiked uphill enjoying the view into the countryside and over the lake.

My favorite miles of the trail were the ones through the woods (two sections). Isn't that beautiful?

In the woods the trail got really narrow and on one side it was falling away sharply. Physically it was not challenging to walk but for a person with vertigo like me quite stressful. The more I enjoyed the little lunch break afterwards and of course again the view over the lake.

Not much later we walked downhill again and through the beautiful old town of Tegernsee - Bavarian style at its best.

And of course such a trip is not complete without a cold beer in a beergarden directly at the shore of the lake enjoying the last minutes of good weather (it started to rain when we were back in the train to Munich).

It took only two weeks before I was back again in the same area but with a different group of people. Our goal was this time the peak of the biggest mountain in that area - the Wallberg (1722 m).  And I took - of course - a couple of pictures:

And this tough guy (or girl) was out to see ....

... to see more of this view:

Next time at Tegernsee will be most likely already in the snow .... more pictures to come!
